Why Is My GIF So Large?

Animated GIF size is not controlled by one quality number. A large canvas, many frames and complex colors can multiply the file size together.

The four biggest reasons GIF files grow

GIF stores a sequence of indexed-color frames. More pixels, more frames and more palette changes all increase the amount of data that must be encoded.

  • Large pixel dimensions
  • High frame count
  • Complex or photographic color variation
  • Long duration or very short frame delays

What to reduce first

Start with dimensions and palette colors because they often reduce size without making motion feel choppy. Frame sampling is powerful, but it visibly changes animation smoothness, so it is better used after gentler reductions.

Why a target-size workflow needs multiple levers

A GIF can remain too large even after palette reduction. A reliable target-size workflow needs permission to reduce dimensions or sample frames when the first compression pass is not enough. Batch Img Tools does this progressively when you set a Max size target.
