How to Combine DPI, Pixels, Format and File Size

Understand which image constraints change appearance, metadata and encoded file size.

Pixels control raster dimensions

A 600×600 image contains 600 pixels on each side regardless of whether its DPI tag says 72 or 300.

DPI is metadata for many digital workflows

Changing the DPI tag alone does not add detail. It matters when a destination explicitly checks or interprets that metadata.

Format and compression control the encoded file

JPG, PNG and WebP can produce very different file sizes at identical pixel dimensions. Final KB optimization should happen after the required format is chosen.
